Configure common field settings

Use this procedure after adding an answer field. It covers the shared Edit controls; individual field guides cover type-specific controls.

Example: required order reference

1. Add or select a Short Text field, then open Edit.
2. In Field, set Name to order_reference. This is the stable identifier used in results, rules, and notifications.
3. In Validation, turn on Required Field when the answer is essential.
4. Select an Accepted data type only when the field type and your requirement support a useful format check.
5. Set Min length or Max length for a known text constraint. Use Min value or Max value only for a meaningful numeric range.
6. Set Custom error text to an instruction that explains how to fix the response, for example Enter the order reference from your confirmation email.
7. Preview the form. Submit a valid value, an invalid value, and an empty value if the field is required.

Appearance controls

When consistency with the form theme is not sufficient, the selected field can also use:

• Font, Font Size, and bold/italic/underline text style.
• Text color, Background color, and Border color.
• Text alignment: left, centre, right, or justified.
• Label placement: left, top, right, or inside.

Use local styling sparingly. A label placed inside an input can become unclear once someone starts typing; top is normally the clearest choice on narrow screens.

Field actions

• Duplicate field creates a copy. Immediately change its label and Name so it does not conflict with the original.
• Clear formatting removes local formatting so the field can follow the common design again.
• Delete field removes the selected field. Use Undo at once after an accidental deletion and review dependent rules/workflows before deleting an established field.

Expected result

The field has a stable unique name, proportionate validation, an actionable error message, and presentation consistent with the rest of the form.
