Field settings reference

This is the index for the complete field-by-field configuration reference. Every field has the shared settings described in Add and configure a field, but many field types also have their own settings. Use the guide for the field you are adding before publishing a form that depends on it.

For the complete behavior/limitation matrix across every v2 field, see the v2 field complete reference.

Settings shared by most answer fields

Most respondent-input fields provide these core settings when selected in the editor:

SettingWhy it matters
LabelThe question or instruction respondents see.
Internal nameThe stable identifier used by responses, conditions, notifications, exports, and workflows.
Required FieldPrevents submission until the field has an answer.
Unique ValuePrevents reuse of an existing value where supported.
Accepted data typeChecks that an answer matches a selected format where supported.
PatternFor fields that expose it (including Short Text), enter a regular expression in the dropdown’s regular expression input. Use anchors such as ^ and $ when the entire answer—not just a substring—must match.
Minimum / maximum length or valueConstrains the permitted answer range where supported.
Custom error textReplaces the default validation message.
Appearance and label placementControls typography, colors, borders, and label position.

Only configure settings that the selected field supports. A disabled or absent option means it does not apply to that type of field.

Selected-field bottom toolbar

When a field is selected on the canvas, v2 shows a bottom Field actions toolbar. Every selectable field has Duplicate field, Clear formatting, Delete field, and Open field settings. Type-specific inline controls appear beside the field’s choices or widget:

Field type(s)Inline toolbar controlsUse
Single Choice, Multi Choice, Drop downAdd choice, Remove, ImportEdit individual choices or open the standard-choice preset picker. Drop down also has an Empty first-choice placeholder switch.

SurveyRemove Question; Remove ChoiceEdit the survey’s repeated question and answer rows.
Social MediaShare on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedInPreview the enabled sharing actions.
Payment ProcessorGateway statusShows when no payment gateway is available; configure gateways before relying on payments.
File UploadAllow multiple filesLets one upload field accept more than one attachment.
Automatic button rowAdd Save / Reset / Print; Hide page buttonsControls the page’s standard navigation/action buttons; this row is separate from a custom Button field.

The folder/open Import control is not a file upload. It opens Import choices, where a preset can be previewed and saved. Saving replaces the current choices; Cancel preserves them. See the Drop down guide for the continents example.

Field-specific guides

Palette headings versus fields

The Fields palette groups controls under headings such as General, Contact, Media, Cart, and Other. These headings are navigation categories, not additional field types. For example, Contact groups Name, Email, Phone Number, and Website; Media groups File Upload, Picture, Video, and Photo Camera; and Other contains Code, Button, hidden fields, repeatable lists, and page breaks. The editor also displays a reCAPTCHA challenge on the canvas when CAPTCHA is enabled; it is a form-level security control, not a palette field.

Safe configuration sequence

  1. Add the field to the form named a test form.
  2. Configure its label and internal name.
  3. Set only the field-specific options you need.
  4. Add validation and a helpful error message.
  5. Preview the form and enter a valid and invalid test answer.
  6. If the field feeds a rule, notification, payment, report, or workflow, test that connection before using the form in production.
